About an hour north of Porto lies the Minho region of outstanding natural beauty. Visit the picturesque town of Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s oldest, and rent a kayak from Clube Nautico. Surrounded by mountains, it’s where villagers still live above their animals in traditional stone huts, the only disturbance being the occasional eagle overhead.

The Rota Vicentina is a fascinating network of paths and trails for walkers that pass through traditional villages with colorful houses, dense forests, and merge with the coast for stunning views of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and stunning sunsets. Try the “fishing trail” and stay at Casa da Ceseira near Brejao (B&B and a double room in an apartment from €60), where the host Marta chats you up at dinner, serving her beautiful fish soup and packing it for you. A packed lunch of homemade bread and smoked ham.
The best time to visit Cromec dos Almendres in the Alentejo region, one of the largest megalithic stone monuments in Europe, is early morning or late afternoon. Entry is free, the site is a few minutes’ walk from the parking lot, and is lined with information boards. It is a 20-minute drive from Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Combine both for a great day.

The Costa Alentejana is the coastline that connects Lisbon and the Algarve. If you drive along the coast, you can explore some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Among the many beaches that can be reached by car but only on foot is Amalia Beach, named after the great fado singer Amalia Rodríguez, who built a house there. It is located a few miles southwest of the village of Carvalhal and offers visitors a fair chance to get one of the best spots to watch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
Don’t be fooled by the name, this is not a donkey ride in the sea. The Trilho do Burros begins at the Santuario da Peningha church in the Sintra National Park, west of Lisbon, and the trail descends far below to the ocean. The upper half combines sweeping panoramic mountain and ocean views with technical rocky bluffs. The half-down slope is fairly flat, allowing you to release the brakes and gain speed over the wide berms and smooth singletrack down to the ocean. You will be torn between the desire to enjoy the stunning views and the need to fully focus on the task at hand. This trail has it all.
During a cycling trip in March, we stayed for two nights at Camp Marcadia on the Odivelas Reservoir in the Beja region of Alentejo. This plot is undisturbed with expansive views, abundant fields and houses for rent. Facilities include very friendly English speaking staff, a restaurant and miniature golf. This is an easy day trip to the historic town of Évora through fields of olive and cork trees.
